Producing blood:
The kidneys participate in blood formation because they produce the hormone erythropoietin, which stimulates the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. Kidney weakness can therefore be accompanied by anemia, fatigue, and decreased performance.
Regulating mineral and acid-base balance:
If there are kidney problems, changes in the balance of minerals and chronic overacidity may occur.
Activating vitamin D:
The kidneys ensure the activation of vitamin D. If the kidneys are weakened, this activation often cannot occur. Conversely, a vitamin D deficiency poses a serious risk for the development of kidney diseases. In both cases, there is a risk to bones, dental health, and overall health.
Protecting the bones:
Kidneys are important for bone health. A disturbed mineral balance, combined with vitamin D deficiency and perhaps overacidity, can lead to a reduction in bone density. Vitamin D allows calcium absorption from the intestines.
Regulating blood pressure:
Weakened kidneys often lead to high blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, kidney values are often checked.
Kidney Cleansing Prevents Their Weakening
Unlike the liver and intestines, the kidneys do not have great regenerative capacity. Once damage and loss of function occur, it often cannot be fully restored. This is why there are more than twice as many kidney transplants as liver transplants each year. Regular kidney cleansing, combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can prevent kidney weakness and protect you from serious diseases.
Causes of Kidney Weakness:
- Unhealthy diet
- Low water intake
- Obesity
- Chronic high blood pressure (can weaken the kidneys or result from kidney weakness)
- Diabetes
- High uric acid levels in the blood
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Smoking
- Chronic medication, antibiotics
- Chemotherapy drugs, etc.
Kidney disorders can be completely silent for a long time, but symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, back pain, or stomach pain may be the first signs of kidney weakness, which is often not taken seriously and is often recognized when it is quite advanced. Kidney detoxification to prevent serious kidney diseases is therefore a good idea and should be carried out regularly for long-term overall physical health.
How to Holistically Detox Your Kidneys:
1. Filtered drinking water prevents kidney stones formation.
Tip: Before going to bed, drink a glass of water, even if it increases the chance of needing to get up to urinate during the night. Drinking water at night is particularly important for the effective prevention of kidney stones, especially in individuals prone to stone formation.
2. Lemon water dissolves kidney stones.
Add the juice of half a freshly squeezed lemon to a glass of water daily.
3. Avoid alcohol:
Alcoholic drinks increase urine output, and consequently, there is a risk of dehydration, which in turn promotes stone formation. Alcoholic drinks are certainly a risk for the kidneys. The liver can only break down about 90% of the incoming alcohol. The rest enters the kidneys unchanged and can damage the sensitive kidney tissue.
4. Kidney herbs:
Many types of herbs have therapeutic functions for the kidneys.
5. Support gut flora:
When the intestines are detoxified and overloaded with unwanted substances like incompletely digested foods, toxic secretions from bacteria, gases from bloating, and other toxins, they enter the bloodstream and strain the liver and kidneys. This means we need to care for the gut microbiome daily. I recommend the daily intake of probiotics as a preventive measure. Find more information here.
6. Liver cleansing for kidney health:
The kidneys can only be as healthy as the intestines and liver allow them to be. Ideally, take probiotics daily and try herbal therapy for the liver from Andrea Moritz's book. Also, the intake of bitter substances, e.g., papaya seeds, curcumin, special capsules with herbs for liver regeneration, or a high-dose milk thistle preparation, is a good idea for liver detox.
7. Diet for the kidneys:
Whether it’s detoxifying the liver or kidneys, a balanced diet based on individual constitution is the best option. You can prevent or correct kidney problems, which automatically leads to weight loss. Any excess is considered a risk factor for all types of chronic diseases, including kidney diseases and stones. I recommend a plant-based diet rich in nutrients from locally-sourced seasonal organic products and temporarily reducing foods high in oxalic acid. You can find more information here.
8. Healing foods for the kidneys:
Asparagus, green smoothies, parsley, brown rice, celery juice, onions, watercress—all promote increased urine excretion, prevent stone formation, and even help expel smaller stones. It is also good to consume at least 20 grams of pumpkin seeds twice a day, which not only prevents prostate problems but also supports the entire urinary system.
9. Avoid sugar:
Sugar consumption increases the formation of all kinds of stones, so stop using sugar for the sake of your kidneys. Soft drinks are particularly dangerous as they contain sweeteners and have a negative impact on the kidneys. I suggest drinking filtered water, herbal teas without sugar, and diluted vegetable juices daily.
10. Less salt:
Ready-made meals from restaurants and supermarkets contain high amounts of salt, disrupting mineral balance and requiring the kidneys to rebalance it.
11. Keep your kidneys warm:
Kidneys don’t like the cold. Therefore, when detoxifying the kidneys, keep them warm (e.g., with a hot water bottle). Heat can activate kidney function, improve blood flow to the kidneys, and ensure that the kidneys can regenerate more easily and remain healthy.
12. Kidney detoxification:
Kidneys are known to be the main regulators of acid-base balance. A detox program can work wonders. You can find the Kidney Detox Guide here.
In this guide, you will learn about foods and herbs that remove toxins from the body and promote better kidney health, as well as many other useful tips to live a better life! However, if you have serious health problems, it is best to detox only under your doctor’s supervision.
13. Homeopathy for the kidneys:
Homeopathy can also support the removal of toxins and help dissolve kidney stones. Consult your homeopath.
These tips are not intended to treat any disease and should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment. Always consult your doctor before making any decisions.
