Strawberry: a delicate antioxidant treasure!

Not only is it heart-shaped, but it also protects the heart

According to studies, the nutrients present in strawberries protect against many chronic diseases, especially heart disease. In particular, anthocyanins have been shown to have a positive effect on heart function, while vitamin C and the fruit's bioactive compounds enhance markers that affect heart health, such as HDL cholesterol, blood pressure and platelet function.

Antioxidant substances

Prominent in the nutritional profile of strawberries are without a doubt the beneficial antioxidants and phytochemicals that the fruit provides:

- Pellargonidin: Belongs to a group of phytochemicals called anthocyanins (from the words flower and cyan) and gives strawberries their vivid red colour.

- Ellagic acid: An antioxidant with good anti-inflammatory activity.

- Ellagitannins: Ellagitannins are converted to ellagic acid in the gut. Both substances are thought to have antibacterial activity.

- Procyanidins: These antioxidants are found in the flesh and seeds of strawberries.

Vitamins & minerals.

Strawberries are also known for the vitamins and minerals that they concentrate in larger quantities:

- Vitamin C: Vitamin C is mostly known for its contribution to good immune system function and skin health.

- Manganese: Manganese is found in strawberries and whole grain products, legumes and vegetables. It is a trace mineral that benefits bone health, fights inflammation and helps regulate blood sugar.

- Folic acid (vitamin B9).

- Potassium: This particular mineral favours the functioning of the heart, is beneficial for the nervous and muscular systems, and prevents osteoporosis and kidney stones.
