The New Year's Eve custom in Greece, is linked to the feast of St. Vasilios (Santa Klaus), from whom it takes its name, and is made in various ways. Usually, the number of the New Year is written on the surface of the dough with peeled almonds, while a coin is placed in the dough and whoever finds it will be the lucky one of the year.
The New Year's cake is cut and distributed on New Year's Eve. After "crossing" it with a knife, we start cutting the pieces, saying who each one is for. The first pieces are cut for Christ, the Virgin Mary, St. Vasilios, the house and the poor man, while the rest are cut for family members and guests. Also, every year my mom (in Thrace) makes a cheese pie with homemade dough, in which she places a coin and we cut it on New Year's Day at the lunch table.
